what the eff is the point?
by cutting the concrete into smaller pieces, you limit the possibility of the slabs cracking at funny angles and separating. Think of it like a cracker. An enormous cracker would just break everywhere. By making indents into the larger cracker (matzoh comes to mind), it will actually hold up to wear and tear.
My dad does concrete work as a second job....
